I don't know if it needs different holes to mount over a Gen 3 lock, but the OP's door would look better with a smaller knob. I just saw that there's a new, as of May 2020, Gen 4 lock version that has a smaller knob - just 72mm (2.82in). We'll have to wait and see if August decides the market is big enough, and the modifications small enough.įor any of these mortise locks, if it can't fit the giant August knob, there's no way it can work. I recently found that August recently started supporting EMTEK mortises, and perhaps with different programming it could be made to support Baldwins & similarly operating ones. Does it behave any differently when turning the deadbolt knob from the inside, compared to turning the key? Though, re-thinking about this, the August operates the lock from the inside, not the outside. Even then it might still be a bit off kilter since the lock wouldn't have three states: "open" "unlatched" and "locked" states, just "open & unlatched" and "locked." You'd have to hold the door closed until it locked again, 'cause it couldn't just be "latched" The August instructions I found online talk about some calibration algorithm, but it doesn't explain precisely what to do and just says "follow the in-app instructions." I was wondering whether it could be taught to turn extra far to get to an "open" state, but can't easily tell. Would be a shame to drill holes in the face and find that it can't apply enough torque. The extra torque alone could prevent it from working. My father-in-law (old man) can only do it with the big-ass Baldwin key. I know another house, using a Baldwin mortise lock that I think operates the way you describe, and it takes a lot of torque on the key to open the door latch after the deadbolt is retracted. The mechanism doesn't pull the other way - you can't unlatch the door from the deadbolt knob. From the inside, there's a part of the mechanism that automatically unlocks the door when operating the inside door lever, so you don't have to turn the lock from the inside to exit. That's a little different from mine, which has a thumb lever right above the outside handle to unlatch the door after unlocking. Functionally, it's always locked from the outside, though there's "locked" and "deadbolted" states. So, I guess your door can't be opened from the outside without a key, then.
